Why Carat Weight Matters

wedding ring engagement ring diamond jewelry

Because it is used to determine how big a diamond is, carat weight is an important factor. Diamonds are graded according to their weight in carats, but they can be found in a wide variety of sizes and shapes.

The ratio of the diamond's mass to its volume is what's used to calculate the carat weight of the stone. This provides us with an estimate of the total carat weight of the diamonds we will be purchasing. In addition, it provides information about the size of the stone after it has been set into jewelry.

Diamonds come in sizes ranging from 1/100th of a carat to 1 carat, and they can be cut in a variety of different styles depending on what you hope to accomplish with the piece of jewelry you are creating.

Round brilliant cuts, princess cuts, oval cuts, pear shapes, and emerald cuts are the most common shapes for diamonds. Other common shapes include pear shape and oval cut.

We Rarely Talk About It

Carat weight is the measure of a diamond's mass as a proportion of pure gold. In other words, if a diamond weighs 1 carat, it has the same mass as one gram of gold.

So why do we rarely talk about it?

Because there are so many other factors that make a diamond beautiful and valuable, such as cut, color and clarity. These factors can be so subjective that they vary from person to person. But carat weight is an objective measure that stays constant no matter who you are or where you live.

Carat is all about proportion.

The carat weight of a diamond indicates its size, with one carat equaling 200 milligrams. But when it comes to color, clarity and cut, the carat weight doesn't tell the whole story

"It has nothing to do with how big or small a diamond is."

So if you want to know more about a diamond's size, look at its dimensions — which are displayed on every diamond's product page — or consult our handy guide below for more information about each important factor that goes into making a great diamond.

Carat weight is more than just size

If you’re a jewelry shopper, chances are you’ve heard the term “carat weight” before. But what exactly does it mean? And why should you care?

Carat is the unit of measurement for gemstones and diamonds that indicates their weight in metric grams. Carat weight is more than just size; it also refers to the rarity and quality of a gemstone or diamond.

The carat system was originally developed as a way to compare diamonds of different sizes so that consumers could easily determine which stone was more valuable. The carat system is still used today as a measuring tool for precious gems, even though it has been expanded over time to include other types of stones such as sapphire, ruby and emeralds.

Diamond carat weight is an important consideration when shopping for diamonds, but it shouldn’t be your only consideration!

Carat weight is simply the weight of a diamond. It’s measured in carats. A one carat diamond is small, while a five carat diamond is usually substantial enough to sparkle on its own. One of the most common mistakes people make when looking at diamonds is assuming that bigger is better, but that isn’t always true. It’s also important to remember that carat weight can vary greatly from one brand to another. So how does that affect you? Because most diamonds measure diamonds in whole carats, companies will divide their diamonds into smaller increments if they are bigger than one full carat, which can make it look as if you’re getting something for less than it’s worth!
