Which Diamond Shape Appears to Have the Largest Apparent Size?

wedding ring engagement ring diamond jewelry

You will find out early on that the weight of a diamond is more important than its dimensions when purchasing one. It's all about how many carats there are!

The majority of round diamonds that weigh one carat are the same size, but there may be very slight variations in the proportions. Ideal cut diamonds have a diameter that is marginally smaller than "spread" diamonds, which have a lower level of brilliance (which are intentionally cut a bit shallower so they can appear wider.)

On the other hand, it might come as a surprise to find out that the ideal proportions of fancy shapes are not the same as those of rounds. Because of this, the circumference is different for each different shape. Because there is less water in a pool that is 10 feet deep as opposed to a pool that is 8 feet deep, the surface area of the deeper pool is going to be smaller.

When compared to a round brilliant of the same weight, some fancy shapes give the impression of being larger, while others give the impression of being smaller. The diameter of a round brilliant that weighs 2 carats is approximately 8.1 millimeters. A two-carat Asscher cut is only 7 millimeters square, so it gives the impression of being smaller than it actually is. On the other hand, the dimensions of an oval weighing two carats are 10.5 mm by 7 mm. According to the opinions of the vast majority of people, it is noticeably bigger than the other two shapes combined.

Why? It is exacerbated by the fact that we have a propensity to assume that taller shapes are larger. This is because the oval cut has a shallow depth to begin with. Because of this optical illusion, the elongated silhouette of many elaborate shapes gives the impression that it is significantly larger than it actually is.

It may appear that these two diamonds are the same size, but the round brilliant diamond weighs 3.00 carats, while the oval diamond weighs only 2.50 carats. That is a significant difference, both in terms of carat weight and cost!

The apparent size difference between the two diamonds may sway your decision in favor of purchasing a fancy shape diamond. (Because when it comes to diamonds, it's pretty tough to find an argument against appearing larger.)

Intrigued? You can see how the shape of the diamond affects its apparent size by comparing the following images, which were taken next to one another and feature fancy shape diamonds and round brilliants of the same weight.

These six diamonds, each weighing 1.25 carats, come in a variety of shapes. See how the elongated shapes give the impression that they are larger? Do you agree that the marquise, pear-shape, and oval shapes that are displayed face-up in the bottom row give the impression of being larger than they actually are?

These five diamonds each weigh two carats and come in a variety of shapes. Which of these shapes appears to you to be the largest?

If you are interested in a different shape or size, the diamond carat size chart will assist you in determining the typical size of the stone you are looking for.

One more interesting fact that will blow your mind is coming up next. In most cases, the price per carat for fancy shapes is lower than the price per carat for round brilliant shapes of the same quality.

Because of this, you will be able to purchase more carats for the same amount of money, which will result in your fancy diamond appearing even larger than the comparisons presented here.

You are sure to find a diamond that catches your eye if you conduct a search for a fancy shape diamond in an intelligent manner while keeping your budget in mind.
