The Radiant Cut Diamonds 101

Preferences for diamond shapes are highly individual. The "ideal" diamond shape is frequently discovered at the crossroads of aesthetic preference and gut instinct. If you prefer brilliant, gleaming diamonds in square or elongated shapes, the radiant cut is an exquisite choice for your engagement ring or wedding band diamonds.

What Is A Diamond With A Radiant Cut?

The radiant cut is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant diamond shapes currently available. 70 intricate facet cuts allow for ample light reflection, creating a dazzling, sparkly effect that catches the eye constantly.

The radiant cut diamond is known for its brilliance, but it also has a variety of other appealing characteristics (pun intended). Diamonds in the radiant cut have a square edging, which is reminiscent of the emerald cut, and when paired with the brilliance of the facet cuts, they are a show-stopper.

An Overview Of Events

In 1981, Henry Grossbard became the first person to reveal the ideal radiant cut diamond.

carat diamond rings

He was a master diamond cutter for more than 30 years, creating beautiful diamonds for the world to admire. After much thought and consideration, he came up with an emerald-cut-inspired diamond shape that incorporated the fiery sparkle of the round brilliant cut.

The radiant cut diamond has been a favorite of brides for the past 40 years.

The Most Important Things To Keep In Mind When Shopping For A Radiant Cut Diamond

Wedding bands and engagement rings are both an emotional and financial commitment to the wearer. Do your homework before making any investment to make sure it's a good one.

Cut, ratio, color and clarity are all important aspects to consider when purchasing a radiant cut diamond.

The Cut

There is no such thing as a universally perfect radiant cut diamond. The cut of your radiant cut diamond can have a significant impact on its appearance, dulling its sparkle and giving it a watery or icy appearance.

The brilliance of radiant cut diamonds can be diminished because of the "lumpy" appearance they take on when they are cut to conserve weight. The facet lengthening effect of a well-cut radiant diamond is enhanced by its enhanced fire.

Ideally, the table and depth of your radiant cut diamond should be between 65 and 70 percent of the total carat weight. It is worth paying extra for a higher quality cut to get a radiant cut diamond that retains its brilliance for both the wearer and the observer.

The Ratio

Ratio, divide the diamond's length by width (in millimeters). The ratios of radiant cut diamonds can range from 1:1 to 1:45:1 because of the square or elongated shapes.

From 1.25:1 up to 1.45:1 and a sweet spot between 1.3 and 1.35:1, elongated radiant diamonds have a wide range.

We've put together a guide to help you find the perfect diamond, but if you prefer a square-shaped diamond or a dramatic, elongated diamond, your desired ratio may fall outside of our recommended range.

If you want a larger stone but don't mind sacrificing some color, the I-J color range is a good compromise.

The Clarity

As a general rule, inclusions in a diamond's facet are referred to as clarity. Diamonds form with microscopic inclusions, such as minerals or fractures, which appear as the diamond crystallizes. When looking at a diamond up close, inclusions may appear as pinpoints, cloudiness, feathers, or crystals.

IF (internally flawless) to I1 or I2 are the various levels of clarity (inclusions). Radiant cut diamonds have a lot of facet complexity, so clarity can be a little more flexible. Radiant cut diamonds can generally be graded S1 or S2 (small inclusions), but this varies greatly from stone to stone.

Consult with an expert to ensure that the stone is eye clean and does not have an icy or milky appearance when selecting a radiant cut diamond.
