There has never been a greater number of second marriages than there are now in the United States. We wrote this guide to make it easier for you to select an engagement ring for a second marriage.
A second engagement should be just as romantic and uplifting as the first. The main difference is that you are both more experienced, wiser, and perhaps less idealistic. Do the rules for purchasing and giving an engagement ring, as they are, ever change?
Placing Your Order For A Second Proposal Ring
As a first priority, there is no legal reason why you cannot have an engagement ring on a second marriage.
It’s not like the wedding should be any less impressive. People have said (usually those who believe that marriage is an outmoded custom) that getting married a second time should be treated as a formality. There will be no engagement ring, no gown, and no dress suits in front of a judge.
It’s almost as absurd as the idea that a second wedding shouldn’t be beautiful in equal measure to the first. Make the most of your time today, because it’s your day!
The General Rules Of A Second Ring Engagement
It’s one of those things you either love or loathe, depending on your perspective. Etiquette is one of those things.
Thanks to a number of recent judicial decisions, many previously strict regulations have been loosening up. Engagement ring rules, for example, have become more lenient over the years. The ideal design of an engagement ring for a second marriage is the same as it was for the first.
Unlike clothing or wallpaper, engagement rings don’t fade with time. In the past, it was beautiful. It is still beautiful today. Not that you have to use the same ring, but a similar design would be perfectly acceptable.
There are, however, a few things to keep in mind:
- If you and your future spouse are further along in life than when you first got engaged, the price range for the engagement ring may need to be higher. A cheap ring may be perceived as a cheap ring because of its low price. For the avoidance of doubt, this is just food for thought, not an absolute.
- You may want to avoid any resemblances to the previous proposals’ designs and styles. You don’t want a constant reminder of the previous relationships (either spouse) that ended in divorce sitting on her finger.
- Think about the dynamics of your ex-girlfriends and how to avoid any potential drama if the ring is too flashy, if applicable.
As a general rule, it’s preferable to stop wearing your old engagement ring or wedding band when embarking on a new engagement with your second spouse. The sad loss of a husband may have ended your first marriage, but wearing the rings from that marriage could make you feel awkward with your new partner. Many reasonable exceptions can be made to this rule.
Selecting The Perfect Ring
There is nothing more complicated than that if you like it. First and second engagement rings are available in the same collection. Diamonds aren’t out of place just because it’s a second engagement. The people who design and craft engagement rings aspire to see them worn. As long as they feel appreciated, they don’t care if it’s not your first time.
There isn’t a metric to measure the difference between a first and second date.
