Carat
Carat measures a diamond’s weight, with one carat equaling 0.2 grams. While larger diamonds are generally more valuable, two diamonds of equal carat weight can vary significantly in price due to other factors. Carat weight has a non-linear relationship with price; as size increases, per-carat price often rises exponentially.
Cut
A diamond cut, ranging from Excellent to Poor, determines how well it interacts with light, affecting its brilliance, fire, and scintillation. An excellent cut can make a diamond appear larger and more brilliant, often commanding a premium over poorly cut stones of the same carat weight.
Clarity
Clarity grades, from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3), indicate the presence and visibility of internal (inclusions) or external (blemishes) characteristics. Higher clarity grades typically correlate with higher values, though differences between top grades may be indistinguishable to the naked eye.
Color
Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds (D-F) are the most valuable in the white diamond range, with prices decreasing as color becomes more noticeable. However, certain fancy-colored diamonds can be extremely valuable due to their rarity.
Certifications
Diamond grading reports from respected laboratories like GIA, AGS, or IGI provide unbiased assessments of a diamond’s quality. These certifications enhance a diamond’s value by verifying its characteristics and ensuring buyer confidence. GIA certificates, in particular, are widely regarded as the industry standard.
How Much is a Diamond Worth?
A diamond’s worth is determined by a complex interplay of the 4Cs, market demand, and rarity. While the 4Cs provide a baseline for valuation, factors like fluorescence, market trends, and even geopolitical events can influence prices.
