History
From the French word for “lemon,” Citrine, a type of Quartz, gets its name. Snake bites and evil thoughts were said to be banished from the wearer’s mind if they wore this gemstone. Citrine necklaces made by the Romans are another well-documented use of the gemstone. Citrine rose to prominence as a gemstone in the late 1800s and early 1900s, particularly during the Art Deco era that spanned the years between the two world wars. The likes of Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo were frequent wearers of citrine jewelry in the ’40s and ’50s.
As the stone of choice for 13th and 17th wedding anniversaries, citrine earrings are perhaps the most popular form of jewelry to incorporate the gemstone.. One of the most popular choices for engagement rings is a citrine ring.
Origin
It is extremely rare for citrine to be found naturally, and only a handful of locations around the world are currently mining it. Mining for commercial purposes is also common in Madagascar, Scotland, Spain and Burma.
Treatment
Due to the fact that most commercial citrine displays a rich, golden hue, buyers are often perplexed by the natural citrine’s pale yellow coloration. A more accurate description might be Amethyst that has undergone heat treatment, which is why most commercially available citrine is a golden or orange hue. The citrine found in nature does not undergo any processing. As a result, color zoning in natural citrine is considered normal and even desirable for commercial applications.
However, the gem can be faceted as well as shaped and polished in addition to being cut into various shapes.
Mineral
Quartz crystals formed in the Earth’s Continental Crust give rise to a wide variety of gemstones, including citrine. There is a trace of iron in the structure of natural citrine, which gives it a pale yellow coloration. Citrine that is found in its natural state is always worth far more than citrine that has been processed. The color, clarity, and luster of a natural citrine gemstone determine its value. Citrines with bright, deep yellow hues are extremely rare and are considered to be of exceptional quality. Citrine, if it exists in nature, should be completely transparent.
Scale of Mohs
On the Mohs Scale, citrine, a variety of quartz, is ranked at number seven. While this indicates that it is a fairly hard gemstone, its ranking tends to be lower if it contains impurities.
Care
Frequently rubbed citrine, like a lot of other gems, can collect dirt and grime over time. A simple solution of water and mild dishwashing detergent can be used to clean citrine jewelry to keep it in pristine condition.
Birthstone
Citrine shares November with Topaz as a birthstone month. Citrine doesn’t belong to any particular zodiac sign, but astrologers have long held that both Virgo and Scorpio can benefit from wearing the stone.
