WHAT IS AN OPAL?
Opals are made up of small silica spheres that range from 3 to 10% water. Allow opals to show off their famous color play, which sets them apart from other gemstones. These gems are called “precious opals.” Only 5% of all opals achieve this requirement. The rest of the stones are called “ordinary opals.” Common opals are less popular than jewelry stones, despite their stunning colors.

Boulder opals are the toughest, although black, crystal, and white opals also work. Boulder opals’ ‘free’ shape allows designers more creative latitude.
Select a low cabochon-cut stone (i.e., a dome on top). Your stone’s top will be less likely to be damaged if it has a flat or low cabochon.
