Sizing an engagement ring correctly is one of the most challenging aspects of looking for the perfect ring. The size of an engagement ring or wedding band may need to be resized if the wearer’s finger grows larger or smaller over time.

What Is The Ideal Size For An Engagement ring?
When it comes to the perfect engagement ring size, it should be snug but comfortable. The ring should be easy to put on and take off, with only a little resistance.
A ring that slips easily up and down your finger and has loosely-placed stones at the base of your finger is too big for an engagement ring. We strongly advise having your engagement ring resized if either of these situations arises.
How To Measure Ring size
It’s impossible to get an accurate idea of your partner’s ring size without having them come in for an appointment. Our custom Diamond Registry sizers are used to measure the ring finger during an in-store consultation by a design consultant from the Diamond Registry sales team. Watch our YouTube video for instructions on how to use them.
Ring sizing at home may be your only option if you are planning a surprise proposal or can’t make it to the jewelry store for a consultation. A plastic ring sizing tool will be sent to you by Diamond Registry in this case. While keeping the proposal a secret, there are a few ways to get a better idea of your partner’s ring size.
Efforts You Can Do at Home
To get an idea of your partner’s ring size at home, the paper strip method is a good place to start. To begin, make a 4-inch wide by 3-quarter-inch long paper strip. Make a mark where the paper overlaps your partner’s intended finger with the paper strip you’ve just wrapped around it.
The circumference of a ring worn by your partner on their left ring finger can be used to estimate the size of a ring. If your partner wears this ring on their left ring finger, this will work.
As a final resort, you can use one of our Diamond Registry ring sizing tools to get an exact measurement of your partner’s rings. In order to ensure that your Diamond Registry engagement ring fits perfectly on your partner’s finger, we offer ring sizers that are specific to our collection of engagement rings from Diamond Registry.
Standard Measurement Units
In the United States and Canada, ring sizes range from 3 to 13. The sizing system used in the United States and Canada differs from that in other countries, despite the fact that they both use the same measurement method.
Please consult our international sizing guide if you are interested in purchasing a Diamond Registry engagement ring but do not currently reside in the United States. If you know your country’s ring size, you can easily size your Diamond Registry engagement ring.
How To Guess Your Partner’s Ring size
Proposing in secret is what you’ve decided to do. How can you ensure that the ring size of your significant other is accurate the first time around?
While there is no foolproof method for determining your significant other’s ring size, there are a few approaches we recommend to get an accurate estimate.
- Check with your partner’s family or close friends to see if they have access to this data.
- When you go to the jeweler, bring along the ring your partner wears on their engagement ring finger. Remember that every finger is different, so don’t try to guess your partner’s ring size based on the size of another one you wear.
- Bring a picture of your significant other to the jeweler with you for reference. Make sure that your partner’s hands are clearly visible in the photograph. It is possible for some jewelers to accurately estimate the value of an engagement ring by looking at a photograph.
Avoid an eternity engagement ring band if you are unsure of your partner’s ring size and want to keep your proposal a secret. If you need to resize an eternity band, you will have to design a new ring from scratch.
Resizing Your Engagement ring
A quarter to a half-size increase or decrease in the size of an engagement ring does not harm the ring’s structural integrity. It’s possible to damage the prongs of your diamond engagement ring by resizing it more than a half size. Diamonds may come loose or fall out of engagement ring prongs if the prongs are damaged or weakened.
