So, if you have a beautiful ring that keeps sliding off your finger this Christmas, don’t worry because jewellery and diamond expert Anthony French at Austen & Blake has revealed his five top tips on temporarily resizing an engagement ring at home without damaging it!

Buy a plastic ring guard online

If your ring is slipping off your finger, plastic ring guards are a great solution. They usually come clear and can be cut to your desired length, so they are barely noticeable once on the ring. Check the size of the ring and ring guard before ordering to ensure that it fits your ring and is the correct size to fit your finger comfortably.

The great thing about plastic ring guards is that they coil around your ring, making removal simple and without causing any damage to your ring. They are available online from sites such as Amazon and are likely to cost no more than £4.00.

Use food-grade silicone

Food-grade silicone is probably not something you’ll have lying around, but if you do, it’s a quick and easy DIY way of making a loose ring stay firmly on your finger. Simply mix up your silicone – make sure it’s clear and not colored – and apply a thin layer to the bottom of the band on the inside and leave it to dry. When it’s dry, try it on; if it’s still too big, repeat the process and add another layer; you can do this as many times as necessary. Because of the non-porous nature of metal, silicone will not harm your new ring and will be easy to remove if you decide to have your ring professionally resized in the future.

Take out your first-aid kit

Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it sounds! Plasters can be used for a quick DIY resize, and while it isn’t the prettiest option, it is a good temporary fix with an item that most people have on hand. You do, however, have to be a little more careful with this method and make sure that the adhesive section of the plaster is not touching your ring, as it may leave a sticky residue that can be difficult to remove. Cut one end of the stick section off and then wrap the absorbent center of the plaster around the bottom section of the band, securing it with the sticky half. If necessary, repeat the procedure to make the ring even smaller. I’d recommend using a flesh-colored plaster so it doesn’t stand out as much.

Wrap string around the band

A much more do-it-yourself alternative to plastic ring guards, but they function similarly. Wrap some string around the bottom of the band, making sure to keep it as tightly coiled as possible. You should only need to cover about 1cm of the band so that it does not extend past the bottom of your finger once it is on. You can repeat this process as many times as necessary to get the perfect fit, just like many other resizing tricks.

On top, stack a better-fitting ring

While this isn’t a resizing tip, it will keep your ring on your finger until you can get it into a jeweller.

Stack an existing ring that fits perfectly on top of the engagement ring to keep it in place and prevent it from sliding down your finger. You might get a few ‘where was my invitation to the wedding?’ questions. ‘ type comments, it is a simple temporary solution that will ensure you do not lose one of your most valuable pieces of jewelry!

All of these suggestions are only for quick fixes, and we would always recommend taking your ring to a jewelry store to be professionally resized; not only does it look better, but the risk of losing your ring is greatly reduced!

Nissan, David and his team were extremely accommodating, understanding and patient with our purchase. They took the upmost care to find the best solution for our needs and went above and beyond normal ‘customer service’ standards. I have absolutely no qualms recommending their products and services. Both were absolutely flawless. I will continue to sing them praises and will most definitely purchase from them again in the future. Thank you again!

Bought a beautiful stone here for an engagement ring. I was a little apprehensive since you’re buying something unseen. But Cid made it easy. In fact, Nissan, the owner also gave a call to make me more comfortable. They sent me the stone to take to a local jeweler with only my Amex in case I bailed on them.
