MAKING SENSE OF
THE DIAMOND SHAPES

The different styles of diamond cuts

Diamond cuts, or diamond shapes, refer to the face-on appearance of a diamond. There is a wide variety of diamond cuts and as techniques and knowledge improve the shapes become more complex. The shape of a polished diamond is classified as either Round Brilliant cut or Fancy cut. There are three different styles of diamond cuts:

Round Brilliant Cut: this refers to the classic round shape and is the most common diamond cut. Other examples of brilliant cuts are: Oval Shape, Pear Shape, Marquise Cut and Heart Shape.

Step Cut: This has a row of facets that resemble the steps of a staircase and is usually four-sided and elongated. Examples are the Emerald Cut and the Asscher Cut.

Mixed Cut: Diamonds of this cut have both brilliant and step-cut facets. Examples are Cushion Cut, Radiant Cut and Princess Cut.

Overview of diamond shapes

All diamond cuts have their own unique beauty and appeal. Choosing a diamond shape will depend on your own personal preference and type of jewelry you intend to mount the loose diamond on. The most popular diamond shapes are:

The most popular diamond shape. It strikes the perfect balance between brilliance, fire and scintillation and accounts for more than three-quarters of all diamonds sold today. Perfect for all types of jewelry.

OVAL DIAMONDOval Shape

The oval shape diamond has a beautiful round brilliance which is similar to a round diamond except that it is an elliptical variation of the round brilliant cut. Creates a flattering illusion of lengthening the hand, and makes the diamond appear larger.

The marquise cut is a variation of the round brilliant cut, with elongated ends that stretch it into an oval shape. The marquise cut tends to emphasize the carat weight of the diamond, making it appear much larger than it is.

This slender cut is ideal for rings, as the elongated shape flatters the finger with tapering points at both ends.
