Exciting: the record sale of an exceptional blue diamond!
Auction house Christie's presents possible 8 to 12 million dollar colored diamond in New York coming April
The latest big and finest blue diamond going up for sale is the 14.62-carat “Oppenheimer Blue”. Since blue diamonds are considered the rarest gemstones in the world, this exceptional blue diamond could fetch a world record diamond price. Because did you know that 0.1% of the world’s diamonds are blue? Of which 1% are graded fancy! In the auction history it is the largest and finest fancy vivid blue diamond ever offered at an auction, according to Christie’s. This gem is a part of Christie’s May 18 Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva and is already estimated to fetch $38 -$45 million USD.
While the 12.03-carat “Blue Moon of Josephine” was the talk of the diamond industry when it set world auction record in November this “Oppenheimer Blue” is going down the same path. Because this gem is graded by the Gemological Institute of America with the highest and clearest saturation color blue possible while weighing 14.62-carat. Previous owner of this great blue diamond is Sir Philip Oppenheimer, whose family controlled De Beers for 80 years before selling 40% of it to Anglo American PLC for $5.1 billion in 2012. He picked this blue diamond despite the fact that he could have any diamond he wanted. The reason he picked this one because it has a perfect hue, impeccable proportions and fabulous rectangular shape according to Francois Curiel- chairman of Christie’s Asia Pacific and China.
Next to the Oppenheimer Blue diamond there will be another potential record-breaking sale at Sotheby’s that could be on the heels of the 14.62-carat. The other blue diamond is colored diamond of 9.54-carat that has once be owned by the child star called Shirley Temple. It is going up for sale for an estimated price of $35 million USD in April. However, the experts in the industry believe it has the potential to break all existing records for its kind.
“This blue diamond’s color and clarity, combined with its traditional cutting style and provenance is truly exceptional”
