Top 10 best diamond jewelry sales at auctions in 2016
The high and lows of 2016 auction season included high profile, large and colored gems
The New Year is upon us and with all those unique diamond jewelry sold at the auction houses a recap is very well in its place. Because in this year some very high profile, large and colored gems were auctioned off at for example Sotheby or Christies. Some of them made all-time records and some failed to sell due to the minimum price. Just like in the past years blue and pink colored diamonds fetched the highest bids. However, this year a very rare green diamond made its name on this top 10 list of best diamond jewelry items at an auction.
One of the largest lows in 2016 at the auctions had to be the Shirley Temple Blue at the Sotheby’s New York Magnificent Jewels sale held in April. The Shirley Temple Blue is a 9.54-carat fancy deep blue diamond that is potentially internally flawless but is graded with VVS2 clarity. The child actress and American diplomat owned the blue diamond throughout her life. The experts had estimated the blue diamond around $25 - $35 million.
While this top 10 best diamond jewelry sales at auction does not contain rubies or sapphires, these items remained in high demand and made record auction prices.
The top 10 jewelry auction sales are as follows:
• The Oppenheimer Blue $58 million
A 14.62-carat fancy vivid blue rectangular cut diamond that fetched a world record for any jewel sold at an auction. The blue diamond was sold by Christie’s Geneva Magnificent jewels sale in May
• De Beers Millennium Blue $32 million
A 10.10-carat fancy vivid blue oval cut diamond. Sold at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite sale in April
• The Unique Pink $31.5 million
A 15.38-carat fancy vivid pear shaped diamond sold for a world auction record price for any fancy vivid pink diamond. Sold at Sotheby’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels and Noble jewels sale in May
• The Cullinan Dream $24.3 million
A 24.18-carat mixed cut fancy intense blue diamond. This blue diamond is the largest fancy intense blue diamond ever to be auctioned off. The blue diamond was sold at Christie’s New York Magnificent Jewels and the Cullinan Dream sale in May.
• Great fancy intense pink diamond $20.7 million
A 17.07-carat fancy intense pink diamond with a step-cut, which was sold at Sotheby’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels sale in November
• Pink pear shaped diamond $18.2 million
A 9.14-carat fancy vivid pink pear-shaped diamond, which was sold at Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale in November
• Miroir de L’Amour $17.7 million
A dazzling pair of 52.55- and 50.47-carat pear shaped diamond earrings with color grading D-color and flawless clarity. In addition, the diamond earrings are graded type IIa, which makes them even more rare. The earrings are the world’s largest perfect pear-shaped diamond eardrops to be offered at an auction.
• Fancy vivid blue pear shape
A 7.32-carat fancy vivid blue pear-shaped diamond, which was sold at the Sotheby’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels Sale in May.
• The Sky Blue Diamond
A 8.01-carat fancy vivid blue diamond mounted in a very special ring designed by Cartier. The ring contained colorless diamonds and was sold at Sotheby’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in November.
• The Aurora Green diamond $16.8 million
This 5.03-carat rectangular-cut fancy vivid green diamond is called the Aurora green. This green diamond is set within a ring surrounded with pink round cut diamonds, which makes the color contrast even bigger. This item got sold at Christie’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels sale in May.
