Yes, the auction season is upon us and we can expect many unique diamond pieces with high carat weight. Coming up soon is the Christie’s Hong Kong Spring Sale of Magnificent Jewels, showing at least 2 truly unique jewelry pieces.
The two diamond pieces are expected to fetch up to $10 million at the auction in Hong Kong. One is the famous diamond ring called The Jonker V and the other one is the Diamond and emerald Palmette necklace.
The Jonker No.5 Diamond ring is made by Harry Winston
In 1934, the Jonker diamond was unearthed as the fourth largest gem-quality diamond ever as the total size was 726-carat. This diamond with the highest color D was found only 5m away from the largest diamond ever found, the Cullinan Diamond. Jacob Jonker was the one who unearthed the diamond and famed Sir Ernest Oppenheimer purchased it but sold it later in 1935 to Harry Winston. The 726-carat rough diamond was displayed for the world to see at coronation celebrations of King George V and Queen Mary. After being displayed to the world the rough diamond was studied to get the maximum polished stones out of it. The rough 726-carat diamond eventually became 13 exquisite diamond stones, from which The Jonker Diamond No.5 is the rectangular 25.27-carat diamond. Christie’s is estimating that the diamond will fetch up to $3 million or most likely even higher.
The Emerald and Diamond Palmette Necklace
Estimated to sell for $3.6 – $5 million, this emerald and diamond “ Palmette” necklace is a unique piece. Palmette is a motif in decorative art, which is in most characteristic expression that resembles a fan-shaped leaf, such as the ones of palm trees. Edmon Chin designed the necklace for the house of Boghossian back in the days. Both diamonds and emeralds are in a repeating palmette motif. Unique is that all 11 perfectly matched emeralds are all without oil while Colombian emeralds are often polished with an oil to hide flaws or to enhance the color. This makes the emeralds even more valuable as emeralds without oil and pure deep color are rare to be found.
If you could buy one, which one would it be? The Emerald and Diamond Palmette Necklace or the emerald cut D-color diamond ring?
