La Légende a 92-carat perfectly polished and symmetric heart-shaped diamond fetched the price of 13 million Swiss francs (about $13.3 million US). This centerpiece diamond of a necklace of cultured pearls broke the world record price in its category but still sold below its pre-sale estimate of $14 million to $20 million.
The La Légende (The Legend) is a heart-shaped diamond with the highest color and clarity grading in the industry. In addition to the diamond’s value, the necklace with the diamond as a centerpiece is designed by Boehmer et Bassenge, which is a Paris-based organization that is named in honor of one of the greatest French jewelers of the 18th century which was a jeweler to King Louis XV.
According to the senior International Jewelry director of Christie’s its current owners gave its name the La Légende and the name will be kept by whoever buys it. The new owners may add their name before or after it but La Légende needs to stay. But it’s a very appropriate name for the new owners to have christened.
The previous record for the category heart shaped diamonds was set in 2011 by a 56.15 carat. The rock sold for $10.9 million, that is couple million less, making La Légende the new record holder in this category.
