Fancy Gray Diamond

Color formation of gray diamonds

A combination of black and white, gray is a non-spectral color. In their purest forms, gray color diamonds come quite close to colorless stones, however, they are highly prized rarity and offer a wondrous range of modifying color combinations in gray, bluish gray, and greenish gray. Gray appears as a secondary color in most other diamonds, the most common being fancy grayish green, fancy grayish blue, fancy grayish violet, and fancy grayish purple. The most famous gray colored diamond is the Sultan of Morocco. The diamond has a Cushion Cut, a blue hue and weighs 35.27 carats. Gray Diamond Fancy Color

A whole different world from colorless diamonds

Natural fancy color diamonds have a special place all of their own in the world of diamonds. The majority of gems retrieved from the mines fall into the colorless to the light yellow range. The GIA color grading scale ranges from D to Z, and if a diamond has a yellow color more intense than Z, it falls into the fancy colored diamonds category. Even stones with the slightest hue other than yellow or brown will be categorized as fancy colored diamonds. Red is the rarest color of all, but there are many different shades of color diamonds such as gray, yellow, blue, purple, green, pink, orange, brown and black.

Picking high-quality gray diamonds

The quality of the color is the most important factor when determining the value of a fancy colored diamond. It is assessed by looking at the distribution, hue, tone, and saturation. Distribution analyses the way color is spread across the stone. The main color of is called the hue, which can have different tints dependent on the presence of modifiers. For instance, a bluish-gray diamond means the color is mainly gray, with blue tints. Tone determines how light or dark a stone appears to be, and the strength or intensity of the color is referred to as saturation.

Diamond shape and carat weight

The shape to which the rough diamond is cut depends on its characteristics and how the color intensity can be maximized. Round Cuts tend to weaken the color intensity, which is why most colored diamonds will have a Fancy Cut. Cushion and Radiant Cut are the most popular, followed by Heart Shape, Pear Shape, Oval Shape and Marquise Cut. Just as with colorless diamonds, carat weight plays a large role in assessing the value. Most of the fancies, regardless of which color type, weigh under 1 carat. Fancy colored diamonds larger than 5 carats are extremely rare and will command very high prices.
