How to Clean a Diamond

Your diamond ring is most likely exposed to grease and grime, which can harm its surface, no matter how careful you are. There are practical things you can do to protect your diamond ring from scratches and damage. Learning how to clean a diamond ring will ensure that it retains its luster and brightness for as long as feasible.

  1. Make a cleaning solution with the ingredients you have on hand. You may use a ready-made jewelry solution, but you can also build one from materials around the house. To eliminate oil, combine a few drops of dishwashing liquid with a cup of warm water.
  2. Remove dirt and oil with a daily massage. To maintain the diamond free of lotions, skin oils, and debris, clean it frequently. It won't appear foggy that way. To keep it sparkling, rub it against a soft fabric (or even your own shirt) at the end of the day. To eliminate oils and salt, wipe your jewelry clean with a gentle chamois or flannel cloth after each wear.
  3. Clean the dirt with water and dishwashing liquid. Soak the diamond in a solution of warm water and dishwashing detergent for at least an hour. Tracy Lantz, associate director of public relations at the Diamond Information Center, recommends cleaning it with a gentle toothbrush. At least once a month, do this.
  4. Soak the diamond jewelry for a while. Allowing the jewelry to soak in the cleaning solution to help break up the dirt and grime of daily life is beneficial. Before going on to the next step, let it sit for about 5 minutes. If the jewelry is especially filthy, you may need to keep it in for longer.
  5. Using a gentle toothbrush, scrub the jewelry. Purchase a new toothbrush specifically for this reason. Remove the item from the cleaning solution and carefully scrape the diamond all around it. Don't forget to collect the diamond's sides and back. Scrub gently, especially if the jewelry is delicate or ancient.
  6. Rinse well and pat dry. To eliminate any leftover dirt or soap, wash the jewelry in clean, running water. To dry the diamond and the rest of the jewelry, use a soft, lint-free towel. If you're afraid about the jewelry falling into the sink, rinse it in a strainer.
  7. Loosen dirt using ammonia and cold water. Soak your diamond for half an hour in a 50:50 combination of ammonia (window cleaner) and cold water. Allow it to air dry after that. Only use this on genuine diamonds, as ammonia can harm other gemstones. Once or twice a week, do this.
