Fancy Green Diamond

Color formation of green diamonds

Natural fancy green diamonds are the second rarest gems found in nature after the natural fancy red diamonds. Green diamonds with no other secondary hues or modifiers, depending on intensity and purity of color, can command astronomical prices. They are therefore valued more than the yellowish green or greenish yellow diamonds. Most green diamonds have gray, brown, blue, orange or yellow modifiers. Green diamonds owe their hue to millions of years of exposure to naturally occurring radiation. The biggest green diamond that has ever been found is the Dresden Green Diamond from India, with a carat weight of 41 carats.

Fancy color diamonds are the rarest of all

Green-diamond-set-in-ringFrom all the different types of gemstones, natural fancy colored diamonds have the reputation for being the most special. Most diamonds fall into the colorless to a light yellow category on the D - Z color grading scale defined by the GIA. Stones with even the slightest color hue other than yellow or brown are classified as Fancy Color diamonds, or fancies. Fancies come in a wide variety of colors and shades such as green, pink, yellow, blue, brown, black, orange, purple and the incredibly rare red. Fancies altogether are very rare and most of the diamonds found weigh below 1 carat.

The qualities of a colored diamond

The most essential factor when determining the value of a fancy color diamond is the quality of the color. The quality of the color is graded by looking at the diamond’s distribution of color, hue, tone and saturation. Distribution refers to how evenly the color is spread across the body of the gem. Hue is the dominant color of the diamond, which can be modified by tints lending more than one hue to a stone. For instance a yellowish-green diamond indicates a green stone with yellowish tints. Tone refers to how light or dark a stone appears. Saturation describes the intensity of the main color of the stone.

Carat weight and diamond shape

Naturally, carat weight also plays an important role is determining the value of fancy colored diamonds as it does with colorless diamonds. Most of the discovered fancies are rather small stones, weighing below 1 carat. Stones larger than 5 carats are extremely rare and therefore command very high prices. However, the most important aspect of a colored diamond is the color intensity. Fancy Cuts have the effect of intensifying color, which is why most colored diamonds are cut in a Fancy Shape rather than Round Brilliant Cut. The most popular cuts for colored diamonds are Radiant and Cushion Cut, followed by Oval Shape, Pear Shape, Heart Shape and Marquise Cut.
