Why Use A Different Stone In A Second Marriage?

wedding ring engagement ring diamond jewelry

Marriage is something we've talked about before, and we've both been married before. Since it will be her second marriage, she has stated she does not want a diamond wedding ring. She has my utmost respect for her opinion, but I was unaware of this issue and assumed that the only acceptable symbol for this level of commitment was a diamond pendant. What do you think?

Queen of the Weddings

It's wonderful that you've got engaged. A diamond ring isn't required to "seal" the engagement, per se. You don't even have to wear a ring if you don't want to. Perhaps Princess Diana had a blue sapphire in her ring. So, if it's good enough for the king and queen... Go shopping with her to get some ideas about what she likes if you're unsure of what to get her. We hope you'll return to us with any additional questions you may have as you plan your wedding.

The Jeweler

Agreed! You don't need diamonds to make a statement. To find out what kind of stone she prefers, you should talk to her about it. I hope everything works out for you two.

No matter how widely recognized diamonds are, there is no rule that says they must be the only symbol of engagement. For a variety of reasons, some couples opt for an engagement ring containing a gemstone other than a diamond. Your future wife-to-be may not want to wear a diamond because it reminds her of her first marriage.

Please don't be alarmed for any reason. A sapphire, citrine, blue topaz or any other stone with a special meaning for the two of you can also be used to get engaged. As long as your fiancee's birthday falls outside of April, you can even propose with a ring that features her birthstone.

Please make sure that whatever stone you choose can withstand the pressure of being worn in a ring. This is very important. For instance, an emerald or an opal would not be a wise choice because of concerns regarding their durability.

The most significant advantage of selecting a stone other than a diamond will become immediately apparent after you have made your decision regarding the special stone and have become engaged. The stone will serve as a one-of-a-kind symbol for the love that the two of you share, as well as your upcoming wedding and your future together. Have the best of luck!
