Some Pointers Buying an Emerald Cut Diamond

wedding ring engagement ring diamond jewelry

Emblematic of elegance, strength, and contemporary traditions, an emerald-cut diamond is a stunning gemstone. The shape is favored by sophisticated and badass brides such as Amal Clooney and Beyonce, with many brides praising its ability to display quality more effectively than other fancy shapes. An emerald-cut engagement ring is for a woman who exudes self-assurance. They are rare, dramatic, and distinctive.

The Emerald Cut's Historical Background

The history of the "emerald cut diamond" or "emerald shaped diamond" can be traced back to the 1500s, when stonecutters first began cutting genuine emeralds into rectangular shapes. Even though emerald stones (in contrast to diamonds) are soft and susceptible to breaking, one stonecutter discovered that "stepped" facets made them more stable. Stepped facets run parallel to each other down the length of a gem, evoking the steps of an Aztec temple in their appearance. A step cut refers to any gemstone that has these parallel, receding lines, and diamonds that follow the same pattern as the original rectangular emeralds are now referred to as "emerald cut diamonds."

What Is The Definition Of An Emerald Cut Diamond?

There are several rows of stepped facets on the diamond's crown and pavilion that run parallel to the girdle, giving the diamond its rectangular shape. It has 57 or 58 facets, just like the majority of other diamond shapes. The emerald diamond's sparkling "hall of mirrors" effect is created by the concentric alignment of its facets, which is why it is so highly valued.

Diamonds of different shapes and sizes, such as Emeralds, Radiants, and Asschers

There are two other popular diamond shapes that may be mistaken for an emerald cut: the radiant cut and the Asscher cut. Radiant cuts are the most popular of these.

Diamonds With A Radiant Cut

Diamonds with a radiant cut have a shape that is similar to emerald cuts in that they are rectangular with cropped corners, but that is where the similarities end. Unlike radiant cut diamonds, which have smaller facets that are aligned to maximize scintillation, Emerald cut diamonds have larger facets that have less scintillation but more depth; both are considered fancy cuts. Consider the difference between the droplets of water on a table and the clear surface of a lake, and you'll begin to see what I'm talking about.

Diamonds With An Asscher Cut

Although both the Emerald cut and the Asscher cut are step-cut diamonds, they are two very different types of diamonds. With cropped corners and a distinctive X pattern on the top facet, the Asscher cut diamond is a square with cropped corners. The Asscher's facets are perfectly aligned, making it the more brilliant of the two diamonds.
