5 Ways to Determine if a Diamond is Real

Whether it's a GIA-certified diamond, a moissanite of exceptional quality, or a vibrant gemstone, you'll always know exactly what you're getting when you purchase with Diamond Registry. Some easy methods for verifying the authenticity of your center stone are also helpful. The following are five ways to determine whether or not you're looking at a real diamond.

1. The Fog Test

Carbon is the only biological substance in diamonds. When you blow on a diamond, the foggy surface disappears instantly because it is a conductor of heat. For a fake diamond, blowing on it will leave you with a cloudy surface that will not go away. To minimize confusion, perform this test on a clean stone.

2. The Water Test!

Only a loose stone will pass this test. First, fill a glass 3/4 of the way with any temperature water. If the stone floats in the water, it is not a genuine diamond.

3. Magnification Part 1

Diamonds can be checked with this method. Under magnification, focus on a star facet on the stone's crown (a jeweler's loupe is most convenient). The doubling you've just discovered indicates that the image is synthetic if there are two of each facet line.

4. Magnification Part 2

Keep your loupe handy and shift your focus from the surface to the inside of the stone. The absence of inclusions in a diamond indicates that the stone is not genuine, and hence it should be rejected. There are only 2% of diamonds that are both externally and internally flawless, thus there is a 98% chance that your diamond will have some form of flaws.

5. Black Light

Fluorescence is present in about 35 percent of diamonds, thus there is a possibility that the stone will emit a blue light under a black light. Check with a few different tests if the blue light isn't there, but if it is, it's probably a hoax.

When in doubt about the authenticity of a diamond, it's always preferable to consult a competent jeweler. If you're still unsure, don't hesitate to get in touch with a professional gemologist! At Diamond Registry, you can talk to a diamond professional regarding diamond verification.
