1990: Diamond Demand in Platinum Jewelry Is Great in China and U.S.
Global demand for platinum in jewelry grew by 40,000 oz. to 1.85 million ounces from 1.81 million oz. in 1996.
Western sales of platinum to China grew from 130,000 oz. to 200,000 oz. in the same period. In Japan, although platinum remains the metal of choice in jewelry, 1996 consumption dropped by 200,000 oz. due to economic weakness there.
For 1997, Johnson Matthey projects further growth in demand for platinum from jewelers and industrial users worldwide.
