● Color formation of pink diamonds
Pink is one of the rarest and most desirable colors, often associated with roses and natural sea coral. The color evokes a strong romance, which is why it is a popular choice for engagement rings. Pure pink colored diamonds with no trace of secondary modifying colors are extremely rare and are usually found in much smaller sizes. Reddish, purplish pink, brownish pink, grayish pink, and orangey pink are the secondary hues found in natural fancy pink diamonds. Pink color is caused by a process known as plastic deformation, a slipping or distortion of the atomic lattice. The biggest pink diamond ever found, the Daria-I-Noor, has somewhat of an elusive reputation. Its precise whereabouts is unknown today, and its carat weight is estimated at 182 carats.
● Fancy color diamonds are the rarest of all
From all the different types of gemstones, natural fancy colored diamonds reserve a special place. Most diamonds that are retrieved from the mines fall into the colorless to light yellow range on the GIA color grading scale. Stones with a slight color hue other than yellow or brown are classified as Fancy Color diamonds, or fancies. Fancies come in a wide variety of colors and shades such as pink, blue, green, brown, black, yellow, purple, orange and the incredibly rare red. Fancies altogether are very rare and most of the diamonds found weigh below 1 carat.
● The qualities of a colored diamond
The most important factor that determines the value of a fancy color diamond is the quality of the color. The quality of the color is assessed by looking at the diamond’s hue, distribution, tone and saturation. Hue is the dominant color of the diamond. There are also modifiers, or tints, which lend more than one hue to a stone. For instance a purplish-pink diamond indicates a pink stone with purple tints. Distribution refers to how evenly the color is spread across the body of the gem. Tone refers to how light or dark a stone appears. Saturation describes the intensity of the main color of the stone. The saturation of lightly toned diamonds can vary from light to intense vivid and darker diamonds will range from deep to dark in description.
● Carat weight and diamond shape
Besides the quality of the color, the carat weight of a fancy colored diamond plays a large role in determining the value. Most of the fancies that are discovered are small stones weighing less than 1 carat. Larger stones above 5 carats are extremely rare and therefore command high prices. The most important aspect of a colored diamond is the color intensity. This is why most rough diamonds are cut in Fancy Shapes because a Round Cut dissipates the color of a stone. Cushion and Radiant are the most popular cut, followed by Heart Shape, Pear Shape, Oval Shape and Marquise Cut.
