World Mining Production – Sep.2000

Total world production of natural diamonds for 1999 was down from 1998 by 14 million carats. Most of the decline was in the industrial diamond sector where we saw a decrease of 11 million carats. The drop in the gem quality diamonds was only a little over 3 million carats. Since this table, compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey, contains only official figures as reported by each country, actual production is probably higher. The largest decline, for example, was in Angola’s production, more than 50%, due to the civil war there. In Canada, Ekati alone, in its first year of operation, produced 2.24 million carats during its fiscal year 2000 (January 1999). Canada’s production is expected to grow in 2000 and in the coming years. We believe world production in both categories for 2000 and beyond will probably be greater. We see this year’s production as a temporary setback. (Figures in thousands of carats.)
