Canada's Third Diamond Mine Begins Construction

May 2005

Tahera Diamond Corp. has moved the last of its building materials to Nanuvat, an area better known for polar bears, as Canada’s third diamond mine, Jericho, begins construction, Reuters reported recently.

The mine is nowhere as big as Ekati and Diavik, the first two mines in Canada, which are located in the nearby Northwest Territories, and produce 4 and 6 million carats a year, respectively. They are both set to run for 20 years.

Tahera is only expected to produce 3.1 million carats a year over an eight year span. Still, it will be the area’s only mine of its type and its builders hope to have a beneficial impact on the area, which currently has 20.7 percent employment.
