Diamond Chips May Replace Silicon In Semi-Conductors

Mar. 2003

The Japanese government plans a joint research project with industry to develop diamond–based semi-conductors that could one day replace silicon as the base for super fast high-voltage semi-conductors.

Scientists said that diamond chips are more durable, as they can work at a temperature of up to 1000 degrees Celsius, while silicon stops working about 150 degrees Celsius. This means that diamond chips can work at a much higher frequency or faster speed and can be placed in a high-temperature environment, such as a vehicle’s engine.
