Importance of Diamond Cut

In many diamonds, the cut is the most important of the 4Cs as it has a profound influence on the shape, fire, life and brilliance of the diamond. Brilliance is the term that is used to refer to the overall light that is reflected by the diamond. Scintillation, sparkle, or life of the diamond is the movement of the light inside the diamond. Fire is the term used to describe the way light is dispersed in the diamond and the way the different colors of the spectrum are shown by the diamond. The diamond cut is determined by

  • Shape
  • Precision of critical angles
  • Proportions
  • Symmetry
  • Polish

Proportion is the relationship between the different parts of the diamond. The diamond is made of the following parts

  • Table (the top flat facet)
  • Crown (the top of the diamond that is visible)
  • Girdle (the edge that is around the middle of the diamond)
  • Pavilion (underside of the diamond)
  • Culet ( the very bottom part of the diamond)

Cutting the diamond is a job that requires high levels of precision and craftsmanship. The diamond cut is said to have the maximum effect on the ability of the diamond to capture and interact with the light. If the diamond cut is too deep, the light will be lost through the base of the diamond, thereby resulting in loss of light. If the diamond cut is too shallow, the light will be lost through the bottom of the diamond and will reduce the brilliance of the diamond. A diamond that is perfectly cut will reflect most of the light that enters it through the top surface or the table of the diamond. This explains why people give a lot of importance to the cut of the diamond when compared to the clarity, color or carat of the diamond.
