Round cut diamonds – Are round cut diamonds more expensive

Round cut diamonds are the most popular diamonds sold across the globe. According to statistics, about 75 percent of the diamonds sold are round cut diamonds. The reason for the popularity is to do with the brilliance that a round cut diamond has over other cut diamonds. Almost all round diamonds are brilliant cut and therefore they are considered ideal for jewelry. The brilliance of a round diamond is largely due to the mechanics of its shape, one that allows maximum light to be reflected. Most round diamonds will have 58 facets (flat polished surface). The stone will have 57 facets if it does not have a culet (small facet at the bottom of the diamond). So why it that round cut diamonds, are expensive when it is compared to most other diamond cuts? Let us have a look at the reasons.

Why are round cut diamonds expensive?

While the demand for round diamonds is more, the yield is relatively low. These two factors together contribute to the higher cost per carat weight of round diamonds. If any product is in demand, its price will generally escalate and it is the same in the case of the round cut diamond. The lower yield is primarily due to the round shape and the number of facets that a round diamond has. The amount of rough stone wasted to create a round diamond is more. When a round diamond is cur out of a rough diamond, the wastage is generally higher when compared to that of other diamond cuts. Therefore, the cost per carat weight of round diamonds is higher. If we are to compare a round cut diamond with a diamond of any other cut, with both diamonds having same carat, color and clarity, the cost of the round diamond will be about 25 to 35 percent more than the other cut diamond. In spite of this increased price, round diamonds are still considered the favorite choice of diamond jewelry buyers.
