● Color formation of black diamonds
Natural black diamonds look striking and dramatic. They are not transparent and do not show fire, but can be exceptionally impressive. Black diamonds may show white or gray inclusions that make them very unique. The color formation in black diamonds is caused by a myriad of graphite inclusions and it is believed that some black stones fell to the earth as meteorites. The world’s largest cut black diamond is the Spirit of Grisogono. The Mogul Cut diamond weighs 312.24 carats and the world’s fifth largest diamond overall. The stone is set in a white gold ring with 702 smaller white diamonds.
● Fancy colored diamonds are the rarest of all
From all the different types of gemstones, natural fancy colored diamonds reserve a special place. Most diamonds that are retrieved from the mines fall into the colorless to light yellow range. The GIA color grading scale ranges from D to Z, and if a diamond has a yellow color more intense than Z, it falls into the fancy colored diamonds category. Stones with a slight color hue other than yellow or brown are classified as Fancy Color diamonds, or fancies. Fancies come in a wide variety of colors and shades such as black, purple, orange, pink, blue, green, brown, yellow, and the incredibly rare red. Fancies altogether are very rare and most of the diamonds found weigh below 1 carat.
● How to determine the quality
The most important factor that determines the value of a fancy color diamond is the quality of the color. The quality of the color is assessed by looking at the diamond’s distribution, hue tone and saturation. Distribution refers to how evenly the color is spread across the body of the gem. Hue is the dominant color present in the diamond, which can have different tints lending more than one hue to a stone. Tone refers to how light or dark a stone appears and Saturation describes the intensity of the main color of the stone. The saturation of lightly toned diamonds can vary from light to intense vivid and darker diamonds will range from deep to dark in description.
● Diamond shape and carat weight
The most important aspect of a colored diamond is the color intensity. This is why most rough diamonds are cut in Fancy Shapes because a Round Cut dissipates the color of a stone. Cushion and Radiant are the most popular cut, followed by Pear Shape, Heart Shape, Oval Shape and Marquise Cut. Besides the quality of the color, the carat weight of a fancy colored diamond plays a large role in setting the value. Most of the fancies are small stones weighing less than 1 carat. Larger stones above 5 carats are extremely rare and therefore command very high prices.
