The reason why we nowadays find larger rough loose diamonds

After finding a large rough diamond – how do we cut it?

Finding diamonds in nature has always been rare only now we hear many larger diamonds are found, what is the reason for these larger findings? According to the comments from the mining companies they have been using another technology for unearthing rough diamonds. Hearing from the new technology it would sound logical, since it is focused to first find the large rough diamonds instead of breaking down the rubble directly. Yet due to the larger diamond findings another question arises, how do we cut these diamonds?

New technology supporting larger diamond findings

At a mining location large machines such as drills do their work to unearth that rare rough diamond that can be cut into a sparkle that fits engagement rings. But the magic happens when the scanners, which identify loose diamonds from a conveyor belt or ruble, show diamonds are found. Since 1970s X-rays are used to analyze the sheer volume of a ruble generated from mining. Only now new scanners so called XRT scanners are more adept at picking out valuable diamonds because the scanners can analyze the diamonds on chemical composition that only reflect light which the older scanners does. In addition, the scanners are larger making it possible to process finding the possible diamonds inside the rubble earlier before crushing them. Thus, the new technology is minimizing the risk of breaking the diamonds.

404 carat diamond

How to cut a large diamond such as recently sold 404-carat diamond?

The steps after purchasing a rough diamond are not fixed but eventually the pick of which cutter is getting the privilege to cut a large diamond will arise. Lets take for example the 404-carat diamond, which got sold. The deliberation who the diamond should be trusted to is jeweler Fawaz Gruosi, the founder of an established company since 1993. While Fawaz Gruosi does not encounter diamonds like this size that often it happens enough for Nicholas Polak the owner to trust in this task.

While nowadays there is 3D-imaging technology for Gruosi and Polak it was still hard to figure out how to cut the diamond. Eventually it was decided to cleave of the ends first to give a view into the stone. Next step was to cut several windows at different angles, to plot the imperfections, followed by using the computer to assess the imperfections and the decide the optimal series of cuts according to Polak.
Besides the technical part at cutting a large diamond commercial considerations need tobe made. Because a buyer might pay more for one large piece than 4 reasonable diamond size while another person might prefer 2 giant diamonds. At the end taking the commercial considerations in notice: two 80-carat pendants diamonds- a perfect match. These two diamonds are basically impossible to find on the market even for high end jewelers in the world. Meaning, the chance the diamonds are getting sold is very high and this is what is definitely important.
