AMAZING: The Blue Moon Diamond has been sold for record price $48.26 million USD
The 12.03 carat vivid blue diamond is the new record holder for blue diamonds
We have talked about this extremely rare blue diamond called “The Blue Moon” for weeks! Today this rare colored diamond was up for auction and fetched a record price of $48.26 million USD. This price is a record for any of these gemstones also if you look at price per carat. We were still amazed by the amazing price the pink diamond fetched at the Christie’s auction of yesterday which was dubbed as “ The lovely Josephine”. But today this sale of this record breaking blue diamond is making us dazzle.
A private collector names Joseph Lau from Hong Kong bought the blue diamond and had the possibility to rename the blue diamond. Now the new name of this extremely rare 12.03 carat blue diamond is “The Blue Moon of Josephine”. The Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau renamed it after his 7-year-old daughter. This record-breaking purchase came just a day after the pink diamond by the Christie’s auction house. Which was surprisingly also purchased by Lau according to the spokesperson at the Chinese Estates Holdings, the property company Joseph Lau controls in Hong Kong. Both extremely rare colored diamonds were purchased for his 7-year-old daughter according to Lau’s office. It has not been the first time Lau bought extravagant items for his daughters. Last year for his 13-year-old daughter Zoe he purchased the 9.75-carat “Zoe Diamond” for $32.6 million USD at Sotheby’s in New York, and another $65 million HKD for the “Zoe Red” which is a red ruby from auction house Christies in Hong Kong.
This blue diamond was expected to fetch between $35 million to $ 55 million USD. It did not make the maximum expected price but enough to beat the record price of five years ago set by the Graff Pink.

So even among these rare blue diamonds the chance of getting a blue diamond that is flawless, (fancy) vivid blue and 12 carats + is just like the blue moon a once in a lifetime happening.
The cutting and polishing of the 29.62-carat rough diamond, which was found in the Cullinan Mine in South Africa, took a skilled team in New York around six months.
