Diamond Jewelry: World record set by 392 carat Sapphire at $17.3 million
Total of $150.2 million including fancy color diamonds, jewelry and loose diamonds
The world record for a sapphire sold at an auction was set on November 10th during the Christie’s Geneva Sale of Magnificent Jewels. World’s 4th largest sapphire gemstone at a 392.5 carat weight, dubbed the “Blue Belle of Asia”, eventually sold for a staggering $17.3 million during the Christie’s auction, completely obliterating the cushion shape gemstone’s pre-sale estimate of $10 million. The sapphire gem has a long history from its origins in Ceylon, to being sold to Lord Nuffield and presented to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on her Coronation Day in 1937. The sapphire is suspended on a diamond pendant, mounted onto a diamond necklace set in white gold. The auction featured a number of loose diamonds and diamond jewelry.
In total, the auction reached just over $150.2 million, with 89% sold by lot and 94% sold by value. According to Christie’s it was the highest total ever reached for a Magnificent Jewels auction in the world. Amongst the other highlights is the pair of diamond ear pendants featuring to 6.95 carat pear shaped fancy vivid blue diamond and the 6.79 carat pear shape fancy vivid pink diamond sold for $15.8 million. The two fancy color diamond pendants are decorated by pear shaped and marquise cut diamonds clustered together, approximately weighing 19.2 carat in total.
Amongst the diamond jewelry presented at the auction, many were anxiously anticipating the sale of the Feuilles de Groseillier brooch with its pre-sale estimate set at $2 to $3 million. The diamond jewelry consists of a cluster of currant leaves set with old mine diamonds, centered with a cushion cut diamond. The diamonds are mounted in precious metals such as platinum and gold.
