Once in a lifetime blue diamond heads for auction

The loose diamond called Blue Moon is valued in between 33 to 55 million USD

Loose blue diamond fancy colored rare big sizeThese days the diamond industry news headlines are mostly covered by the upcoming auction of an extremely rare blue diamond called ‘Blue Moon’. Auction House Sotheby’s is planning to auction this loose blue diamond at November 11 in Geneva. The loose blue diamond, which is polished out of a 29.62 carat rough diamond is estimated to be sold for a record price between 33 to 55 million USD.

The blue moon is a rare blue diamondThis blue beauty was found in the Cullinan mine* in South Africa and is graded fancy vivid blue, which is a very high grade for colored diamonds. In addition, The ‘Blue Moon‘ has an exceptional clarity graded IF (Internally Flawless) by the GIA and is cut into a cushion shaped fancy cut with a total carat weight of 12.03, which is a very rare carat size for a colored diamond especially fancy vivid blue. Fancy Vivid Blue is the highest possible color grading for colored diamond according the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This blue diamond is therefore labeled by the GIA as exceptional and a once in a lifetime discovery! This is the reason why everybody is expecting the blue diamond to break the record for a stone with these characteristics. To cut the blue diamond from rough diamond into a cushion cut took the New York based gem cutter more than six months. The result is a very beautiful blue diamond weighing 12.03 carats cut out of the 29.62 carat rough diamond which measures 15.57mm by 13.46mm. Furthermore, the diamond is now turned into a perfectly balanced color and purity making it a sensational cushion cut blue diamond. The ‘Blue Moon’ is a 12.03 carat Fancy Vivid Blue cushion cut diamond with a Internally Flawless clarity.

David Bennett, Chairman of Sotheby’s said “ Blue for me is the most mysterious and magical of all diamond colors” and “this gem will now take its place among the most famous gems in the world”. This can be very true based on the facts, because finding a diamond with this natural hue is very unlikely. You’d have a 1-in-10.000 chance of finding a colored diamond according to the Daily Mail. Therefore to find one like the ‘Blue Moon’ is extremely rare.

Can’t wait until November 11th? The ‘Blue Moon’ is now displayed in the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles.
