Incredible 89 pear shaped diamond D color VVS1Following recent trends for diamond prices and sales during auctions, Christie’s diamond auction held on December 10 saw a number of large loose diamonds and diamond jewelry going under the hammer for high prices. The loose diamond that took the lead was the 89.23 carat pear shaped diamond D color VVS1, which sold for $11.1 million or $124,000 per carat. The auction in total garnered $66.6 million. Recent diamond auctions have seen tremendous result, especially for colored diamonds such as pink and yellow diamonds, as well as fancy diamond shapes such as the cushion cut, radiant cut and princess cut diamond.

The auction featured a number or colorless diamonds and colored diamonds and a few natural pearls. It was the final diamond auction for Christie’s this year, which altogether produced an amazing tally of approximately $740 million worldwide in 2014 alone. Other noteworthy sales during the auction include the pair of pear shaped diamond earrings, fancy light yellow diamonds of 52 and 51 carats which sold for $5.4 million; a 5 carat ring set with a Burmese ruby which sold for $1.65 million; a 21.3 carat oval cut diamond, fancy light pink which sold for $4.25 million; 32.32 carat flawless oval cut diamond sold for $4 million and the 14.28 marquise cut diamond, fancy brownish flawless clarity grade which sold for $2 million.
