Sotheby’s Says December Sales Surpasses Estimates

December 2005

Sotheby’s December sale of Magnificent Jewels surpassed its high estimate to bring in a total of $23.8 million, with 90.6% sold by value and 81.7% sold by lot.

Among the highlights of the sale:

A diamond ring by Harry Winston featuring an emerald-cut diamond weighing 26.09 carats, D color internally flawless, flanked by 2 triangular-shaped diamonds weighing approximately 3.50 carats, mounted in platinum, went for $1.6 million.

An 12.6 carat oval marquise-shaped diamond, D color VS1 clarity, flanked by 10 French-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, went for $559,200.

A 3.16-carat fancy intense blue diamond, VS clarity cushion cut, went for $1.09 million, or $345,000 a carat.

"Today’s results demonstrate the market for diamonds remains very strong," commented Gary Shluer, director of Sotheby’s New York Jewelry Department.
