Tiffany Criticizes Mine
April 2004
Tiffany & Co. is opposing a new silver mine in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area in Montana.
In an open letter to the U.S. Forest Service, the company said the mine would hurt the area, which is home to endangered grizzly bears and lynx, and discharge wastewater into a tributary of Lake Pend Oreille.
“We’ve always believed that mine development should respect the environment,” said Tiffany chairman Michael Kowalski.
Kowalski said he wrote the letter after reading about local opposition to the Rock Creek Mine. The company also opposed past proposals to open a gold mine near Yellowstone National Park.
