Trade Boosts Conflict Diamond Bill
Nov. 2001
With all the talk about the war on terrorism, the issue of conflict diamonds has faded into the background. But it is still an important issue, where lives are also at stake. The stakes are high for the industry as well, given the recent "Law and Order" episode on the subject.
Recently, Matt Runci of Jewelers of America and Cecilia Gardner of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee testified before Congress on behalf of the "Clean Diamonds Act," the new compromise legislation between industry and NGOs. We urge all members of the industry to call their representatives and urge passage of this legislation, and stop this problem once and for all.
