Angolan government, rebels negotiate diamonds -

Government efforts to keep the peace in Angola following two decades of civil war may
result in the loss of contracts or concessions there by foreign diamond mining companies.
Secret talks are reportedly focusing on dividing Angola's $1 billion a year diamond wealth
between the government and Unita, the rebel faction to prevent the outbreak of war again.
One deal is reported in which the rebels turned over to the government the town of Cuango
in Angola's diamond heartland. Companies with contracts or concessions to mine in Angola
include: De Beers, Ashton Mining and DiamondWorks.
